Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA)

MPIA by S. Egner/MPIA

The MPIA is one of about 80 institutes of the Max Planck Society. Together with other institutes in Heidelberg it constitutes a worldwide renowned center of astronomical research. Two fields of scientific work are given priority. One is the formation and evolution of stars and planets in our cosmic neighborhood. The second research focus at MPIA, galaxies and cosmology, is on a better understanding of the evolution of the present-day highly structured universe. MPIA participates also significantly in the instrumental development and use of the largest telescopes on earth and in space - like the Very Large Telescope in Chile or the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope. Furthermore, the Haus der Astronomie (HdA), a center for outreach, education and science can be found on MPIA campus.
