Aoife Hopkins

Participant of the International Summer Science School in 2018

Aoife Hopkins (16)  from Montpellier in France was looking forward to her stay in Heidelberg. During her visit she had the opportunity to get an insight into the work of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). Aiofe was very happy about exploring Heidelberg and its surroundings. Especially the old city center with its historic buildings and its cobblestone streets impressed her. Next to gaining knowledge about scientific research, her hope was to find new friends from all around the world. "I am very thankful that I am able to make this experience here in Heidelberg", she says. 

Tim Chen

Tim Chen (17) made his way to Heidelberg from the Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio. He had the chance to do an internship at the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR). In particular, Tim was interested to improve his knowledge about scientific research: "I am very happy to help the scientists with their projects in the upcoming weeks".

Harry Stuart

"Making new international friends, doing a great internship, getting to know a foreign culture and having a good time in Germany". This are the aims of Harry Stuart (18) from Melbourne in Australia. During his four weeks in Heidelberg he observed the projects of the scientists at the Max-Planck-Institute for Astronomy to get some impressions of the work in the world of science. 
 

Matthew Groll

Matthew Groll (16) from the Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio sees his fist trip to Europe not only as a great opportunity to get to know a foreign country, but also as a chance to get exciting insights into the scientific field of nuclear physics. "I have high expectations of the cooperation with the professors in the laboratory of the Max-Planck-Institute in Heidelberg. I look forward to working in groups, because group work isn't really possible in our school at home."

Tamar Schatz

Tamar Schatz from Rehovot was also happy about her travel to Heidelberg. The 16-year-old  assisted the scientists at the Max-Planck-Insitute for Medical Research for four weeks. Besides her internship Tamar looked forward to get in touch with people from all around the world and learning about a new culture.

Elias Smyej

Elias Smyej (17) from Montpellier was another participant of the 2017 International Summer Science School in Heidelberg. His internship took place at the German Cancer Research Center. His motivation for joining the International Summer Science School: "It is my dream to study medicine or biology one day to help other people".
 

Johanna Süß

Johanna Süß (18) from Bautzen in Germany liked the fact that all participants of the International summer school did a lot of activities together. This way everyone got to know each other really fast. In fact, the young scientists got along so well, that they planed to see each other again in London. Johannas favorite project during her internship at the Center for Organismal Studies was the Life Cell Imaging. "We observe proteins from cells with a microscope. That was really interesting", she explains. 

Katy Koo

Katy Koo is 18 years old and traveled all the way from South Korea to Heidelberg. At the International Summer Science School she really liked the variety of activities with lots of different people. One day she wants to come back to Heidelberg with her parents to show them the beautiful castle. The most interesting project in her laboratory was the use of an electron microscope. 

Pratap Singh

"Heidelberg is a very interesting city with a beautiful old city center. It reminds me a little bit of Cambridge.", said Pratap Singh. Despite the fact that his travel program mainly consisted of studying, the 17-year-old enjoyed his first trip to Germany and is looking forward for another stay. All in all Pratap was happy to made this unique experience, because he learned a lot of things that were different from his hometown Cambridge.

Kim Hugh

"I was immediately excited, when I first heard about the International Summer Science School", said Kim Hugh from the United States of America. With his interest in genetics, the goal of his internship was getting insights into real scientific research. Besides his will to improve his scientific knowledge, Kim was looking forward to make new international friends. 

Jonah Hansen

Jonah traveled from Australia to Heidelberg. "I am very interested in science. Especially the scientific field of astrophysics fascinates me", explains Jonah. He recently took place at the National Youth Science Forum, which is a partner program of the ISH. 
The internship in Heidelberg was his next step of increasing his scientific expertise. 

Helly Hayoun and Dina Teper

Helly Hayoun and Dina Teper from Israel were both happy to make new experiences at the International Summer Science School 2015. "I absolutely love science", said Helly.This explains why she already was at the Weizmann-Institute of Science in Rehovot. Dina is enthusiasted about science as well. During her stay in Heidelberg, she wants to get in contact with new people and learn fascinating things about research. "I am happy to make this great and unique experience".
